KOM Seminar: Journalism Codes of Ethics and self-regulation from the point of view of animals – A discourse study
This time our Visiting PhD student Tatu Matialianen from the University of Helsinki in Finland will present his ongoing doctoral work intersecting journalism, ethics, and critical animal studies.
Tatu Matialianen asks for input on his third and final study within his compilation thesis. He plans to submit the article in May 2025 to Journalism Studies. He specifically welcomes feedback on his research material and method. The first article of Tatu’s PhD dissertation was recently published (open access) in the Journal of Media Ethics. The manuscript for his second study will be edited and published later as a book chapter in "Animals and the Media" (Palgrave-Macmillan).
Tatu Matilainen is a PhD researcher at the University of Helsinki, focusing on journalism ethics and animal rights. At the moment, he is studying journalism’s codes of ethics through discourse analysis. His forthcoming articles include “A communicational ontology inspired by Peter Singer” and “Why isn’t there more news about animal suffering? Interviewing journalists”. He is a founding member of the International Animal Journalism Association (IAJA) and has a decade of experience in the book industry.
